Description

Dorothea, 27ft Wooden Gaff Yawl built along the lines of the West Country Falmouth Quay Punts. 27ft 3ins deck length, 5.66 tons registered weight. Built and designed by W.E.Thomas of Falmouth in 1909.

Carvel planked hull of Pitch Pine planking on Oak. A Traditional Gaff Yawl rig with auxiliary engine .
A solid classic wooden vessel offerings comfortable accommodation in one cabin with generous headroom  (5ft 8ins).

She underwent a major restoration 15 years ago, the” Works” included: New Transom, Stem post & Garboards, The keel was dropped and she was given new keel bolts.

Many of the ribs were replaced or doubled , She had one or two new planks, a new beam shelf, new Oak deck beams & a new deck (laid teak on top of epoxied marine ply.) She was relaunched in 2016 .
In her present ownership of five years, she has been well kept, sailed, kept on a swinging mooring in the Summer and professionally maintained.

Presently laid up for the Winter , Undercover on a tidal mud berth mooring, plan is to have her refitted in the Spring and then return to her Summer mooring May/ June.

Engine

Volvo Penta 3 cylinder, 19hp, diesel engine.   Installed new in 2002, has very few hours on it. Engine access is behind the Companionway steps.
Fresh water heat exchanger to sea water cooling. Shaft driven, centrally sited to twin bladed propeller. Plastic fuel tank
6knots to max of 8knots.  Single lever Morse controls, in the cockpit. Forward and reverse gears.  Range of 180 nm.

2 x heavy duty batteries. In battery boxes under companionway steps

Construction:

Wooden Carvel planked, displacement hull, long keel,  Pitch pine planking on grown Oak frames. A  Transom stern.
Teak laid flush deck, laid on top of 2.5inchs marine ply epoxied deck, a natural scrubbed finish. Varnished Teak Brightwork. A small deep open Aft, self draining cockpit with seating either.

A small Teak doghouse rise over the companionway stairway, sliding hatch over.

External Iron keel, 1/2 ton of internal lead trimming ballast. Tiller steering. Steel floors and keel Bolts. ( All replaced 25years ago.)

A Teak forehatch and an opening skylight over the saloon. both made from wood which came from the control towers of Tower Bridge!..

Displacement Thames tonnage 8 tons.

2021 Condition survey. Much of the recommendations have been attended too. She is now requiring a Spring Refit 2026.

Accommodation:

Below Dorothea has been professionally fitted out all in Oak with the exception of the cabin sole of Ash. The interior is open plan, with a large berth running up to the stem.
From the Companionway steps, a quarter berth to starboard. a bench seat to perch on at the navigation station and chart table.

For the most of the internal headroom of 5ft 8ins. Headroom over the steps with a Doghouse formed in the cabin sides giving the ability to stand at the wash bowl,

a Bronze manual water pump, feeds the galley sink, a stainless steel water tank under the port berth.

A gimbled, double burner gas hob, grill and oven. Gas locker is set astern of the cockpit, drains out through the hull.
Two opposing settee bench berths with stowage behind and beneath, trotter box ( portside) Blue with black fleck upholstery berth cushioning.

Gimballed cabin oil lamps.

A Half bulkhead installed to port amidships, a marine sea toilet has been installed. The fore peak is a full double berth.

The main mast meets the keel, through the deck head. Small opening bronze portlight set in her topsides.

Equipment manuals, two sets of keys, Documents and papers appertaining to the vessel.

Sails and Rig 

Traditionally rigged as a gaff yawl. Keel stepped main mast. Mizzen mast. A Bumpkin aft and Bowsprit forward.
Traditional Blocks and tackles.  All solid Douglas Fir varnished masts and spars: 10ft Bowsprit, 8ft Bumpkin
White Dacron sails, All made by James Lawrence of Brightlingsea.
Main sail with slab reefing,  a Jib,  a staysail, Mizzen sail,  All in good condition, were all new 2005,  a genoa – synthetic fabric (from a 1/2 tonner )
Standing rigging stainless steel, Running rigging synthetic, Hempex.
4 x deck winches. Halyards use purchase of traditional blokes.

   

Relaunched after refit 2011

Navigation Equipment:

An Iron tiller shaped to work around the mizzen mast which steps very close to the transom, through the aft deck.
Echo sounder, 2 x Compasses (1 x handheld x cockpit mounted)
VHF radio, with DSC & GPS links Navtex GPS
Clock and Barometer, also gives temperature and humidity levels.
Navigation lights:  mast head, removable Port Starboard and stern lights, Anchor light on mast.

A previous owner of her was Mr Trafford Leigh-Mallory in the 1920’s, he was in charge of the 12 group in the Battle of Britain with the UK and American Forces, at the time of the Normandy Landings.
