Description

Built in 1914,  MARY AMELIA, a famed Leigh Cockler, Bawley rig.  An ex working fishing boat,  she commercially fished, under sail until the late 1920’s.

Converted to a motor fishing vessel, and continued working well into the 1950’s.

After ending her working days she was left, sunk nr Pin Mill, Suffolk. 1970’s.
Then 1981 to 1983, Colin Fox at the Webb’s Boatyard, Pin Mill, re-floated, rebuilt and  rerigged her. With the exception of putting the centerplate and casing back in her (It had been removed, along with her rig, when converted to motor).

As a result , once back in commission under sail, her performance was all rather disappointing.
The present owner purchased her in 2002, he sailed her for a few years, before deciding to take her to the St Osyths Boatyard, to have a new centre board and casing installed. The bulk heads were strengthened up,

this work transformed her sailing performance.  In 2008 she went into a boatshed for an 18 month, 70% rebuild which included the installation of a 37hp Beta diesel engine. She was then  surveyed and licenced for work,

enabling her to carry up to 8 charter passengers. Sailing under a Smack Sailing Exemption in local waters. She has competed in Smack Races, Traditional Sail Regattas and with the Old Gaffers.

A Traditional vessel, ideally suited to sailing on the East Coast, with her shallow draft and centre plate lifted, suitable for sailing in and out of all the East coast rivers, at nearly any state of the tide.
Her owner has relocated to Cornwall, where the sea conditions are not ideal for her. He’d rather she remained on the East Coast.

Presently, she is under cover on a tidal pontoon in the Smack Dock, Brightlingsea, Essex.
