Description

Dorothea, 27ft Gaff Yawl built along the lines of the West country Falmouth Quay Punts with a comfortable cabin.

27ft 3ins. hull length   5.66 tons registered weight. Built and designed by W.E.Thomas of Falmouth in 1909. Carvel planked Pitch Pine on Oak.
Part of her provenance was a previous owner being Mr Trafford Leigh-Mallory in the 1920’s , he was in charge of the 12 group in the Battle of Britain and the UK and American Forces at the time of the Normandy Landings.

Construction:

Carvel planked long keel hull. Pitch pine on oak frames.
Teak laid deck. Deep open Aft cockpit.
Tiller steering.
Gaff yawl rig. Keel stepped main mast. mizzen mast with bumpkin aft and bowsprit forward.
Accommodation:

Below Dorothea is fitted out in Oak, except for the cabin sole which is Ash. Solid fuel stove is set, port side amid ships in the Open plan cabin. From the companionway steps there is a quarter berth starboard. a bench seat to perch on at the navigation station and chart table. Engine access is behind the companionway . There is more headroom over the steps with the doghouse…. This means that one can stand to do the washing up, bronze manual water pump. feeds the galley sink. A gimbled, double burner hob, grill and oven..going forward two opposing settee bench berths with stowage behind, Blue with black fleck upholstery. . there is then the stove ( presently not plumbed in)the mast meets the keel through the deck. Up in the fore peak is a double berth. She has small opening ports her topsides. A Porta loo which stows under forward berth.

Sails:

Traditionally rigged as a gaff yawl….
White sails- A whole new suit of sails made for her  2005,  by James Lawrence of Brightlingsea. Slab reefing, roller furling gear for the head sails, blocks and tackle, Lignam Vitea deadeyes with lanyards. Keel stepped mast.

All solid wooden varnished solid Douglas fir masts and spars, bumpkin and bowsprit made in 2005. All stripped back and re varnished summer 2016……
