Description

Stealaway is the No:1 of twenty two, 27ft Bangor S Class racer cruisers built. She is the only one of type, to carry a Bermudan Cutter rig.

Built in Balyholme, Northern Ireland, to a very high standard, 1946. She has been well maintained and underwent an extensive refit in 2018/9

by Upsons Boatyard of Aldeburgh, Suffolk.   Present owners bought her in 2017 and have enjoyed cruising the East Coast and taking part in the Classic Regattas.

Engine Description: Yanmar GM20 diesel engine, 1982, sitting on timber bearers. Winterised annually.
Fixed triple bladed propeller. Shaft driven. Gearbox replaced with new 2019.
Stainless steel fuel tank. Freshwater cooled. Electric start.
Morse controls in cockpit. Engine sited under the companionway and cockpit.
Engine spares.

Partway through her extensive, refurbishment. Replacement of decks and coach roof.

Construction:

Carvel planked Mahogany on Oak frames, long fixed keel. canoe stern,

an open aft self draining cockpit. Much of the cockpit fitted out in varnished teak and mahogany.

The hull is copper fastened long boards of Iroko below the water line and Mahogany above. Long fixed Iron ballast keel, 1.75tons. Steel Keel bolts.

Steel strap floors. Oak timbers and frames, Pine Bilge stringers and Beam shelf Deck is timber planked overlaid with ply wood which has been GRP sheathed and given a paint finish in light grey.
Under the deck she has steel and wooden beams and knees. Coach roof coamings are of varnished mahogany. its roof is ply over planked wood, pine. GRP sheathed and painted.
Rudder of Mahogany with steel straps, steel rudder tube. Small anode fitted to the hull.

“Upsons Works”  included: New decks & frames, Keel bolts were replaced. She was rewired, hull stripped back to bare and repainted.
New Lofrans windlass and chain. Wilmex self tailing winches and a new gearbox.

Accommodation:

Main companionway with sliding hatch over and washboards of Mahogany, can be secured.
Houdini hatch let in to the foredeck over the fore cabin.
Fixed glass portlights fitted into the coach roof coamings, couple of vents, let into the coach roof over the galley and Heads.

     

Companionway steps to saloon. To port navigator’s seat and chart table, navigation instruments. The domestic and service batteries below Navigation station.
5ft 6ins headroom below.  Two long settee berths in the saloon, cream vinyl berth cushions new in 2020. Berth 1 – is 6ft,  Berth 2  – 6ft 4 ins.
Double berth (port)with lockers beneath, converts to dining table.  Single berth to starboard with drawers below
Heads in forepeak, anchor /chain locker forward.
Galley to starboard  opposite the Nav. station, various lockers/sink, Plastimo 2 burner /grill on gimbals.
Gas locker in stern locker.
A Lavac vaccum toilet, direct discharge overboard.
A Taylors brass heater [not installed]  available by separate negotiation.
A flexible 30 litre tank to galley brass water pump.

Rigged as a Masthead Bermudan Cutter.
Original Spruce Mast, a single piece, keel stepped and Spruce boom, Twin Sailspar Roller furling headsails.
Stainless steel standing rigging, Running backstays, Running rigging of synthetic materials. led back to the cockpit winches.
Wilmex self tailing genoa winches, spinnaker pole, 2 x single speed winches in cockpit for the Genoa sheets.
Tufnell snubbing winches fitted to the coach roof.

Sail Wardrobe:
Mainsail, Staysail both Tan polyester fabric made by Mussett’s in 2004, All overhauled in 2021. All in good serviceable condition.
White Jib with sacrificial strip,  Tan synthetic canvas sail cover, overhauled in 2021.
