“Miranda” was designed by the esteemed John Leather, as a one-off commission for the equally renowned Essex author and yachtsman, Hervey Benham. Miranda was Hervey’s last boat, she was designed along the lines of an East Coast Sailing Smack, carvel built with Mahogany and Iroko planking on Oak frames.
She was described by John Leather in his specifications as “a wooden, shoal draft, auxiliary fishing yacht”, and in Hervey Benham’s obituary as a ’17 ton cutter’ – but although a very substantial boat, she is considered extremely elegant and easy to handle. Whilst her deck layout and rig have traditional appeal for sailors, Miranda could also be used for fishing with a beam trawl, as Hervey did.
For those with a particular interest in the history, the sale will include all the original construction plans together with carbon copies of John Leather’s specification for the boat and a letter from him to Hervey Benham.
